| My relationship to art is about transformation. My inspirations are a witnessing of transformation. I am often drawn to weathered, aged, even ravaged objects. They suggest to me hidden beauty, dimension, evocative shapes, a mysterious past, and draw me in and stimulate my imagination. These seasoned surfaces also symbolize for me evolving consciousness: uncovering, shedding layers, until the core is revealed. Many external stimuli inspire my work -- nature as well as urban detritus. The visual and tactile impressions I take in are condensed and abstracted and represented by shapes, colors, and layers. A frequent motif within the layers are primitive goddess symbols, many of which are also nature symbols. The goddess symbols are meaningful to me because they are organic and represent various aspects of transformation. Yet my work is modern and essentially abstract. My overall intent is to consolidate into a multidimensional one the old and the new, a kind of purposeful pentimento. I work mainly with acrylic paint on hot-pressed watercolor paper. I may also use one or more of pastels, charcoal pencil, Polaroid image transfer, sumi ink, thread and cloth. | Gallery One Judy Seidel P.O. Box 8124 Berkeley CA 94707-8124 |
